Spring Skin Care To Do List

With spring comes a sense of lightness, emergence and awakening. It is time to swap-out your wardrobe – and your skin care and selfcare. As day’s brighten and sunlight time lengthens, activities and skin care naturally transition too. This year, make the transition mindfully.

Here’s your skin care to-do list from the dermatologist! 

It’s a 3 week program to transition you and your skin gently into Spring mindfully, fully ready to awaken to this glorious new season.

1. Get serious about sunscreen

You’ll be outdoors more. Be sure you are using an SPF 30+ broad spectrum zinc oxide product. I’ve been extolling the superiority of zinc oxide for years and now the FDA is coming around too. 2. Loosen up your body and spirit with yoga.

Stretch, unblock held tension, bend and yield to more physical activity. Like a bear rising from hibernation, our bodies have an awakening too as weather warms and physical activities increase. I’m upping my yoga now, easing my body through the last days of winter, ready for spring warmth.

3. Exfoliate

Help dead cells release to reveal fresh and dewy new skin. Skin almost hibernates in winters dry, dehumidified air. Elbows roughen, shins and arms flake and hands feel like sandpaper. Facial skin becomes dull too.

4. Boost your skin’s antioxidant reserve to avoid damaging free radicals.

You’ll want to be out walking or sitting on a bench in the spring sunlight. Wear antioxidants under your sunscreen. Green Tea EGCG polyphenol antioxidants and L-ascorbic acid/vitamin C have proven benefits for helping your skin resist UV free radical damage that comes with exposure to sun and environmental stresses.

All skin types benefit from green tea without difficulty. As you transition into spring, prune out the extraneous products and treatments you occasionally use. Focus on what’s really important for your complexion. It’s analogous to pruning roses or fruit trees, this focused simplification will push forward new vigor for your complexion. Here is my guide:

Cleanse

Chose a simple cleanser based on your skin type. The idea is to remove product, oil, dirt, debris without over-cleaning your skin’s natural barrier lipids. Correct

Correct skin problems by applying therapeutic products right after washing. What is it your skin really needs? In spring, this is when you want to focus on loading your skin’s antioxidant reserve with green tea and/or Vitamin C during the day. At night, think about Retinol. Hydrate

Protect

Use a pure zinc oxide sunscreen this year. It’s time to make this simple and smart sunscreen choice. Zinc oxide is now easy to use. It provides the best and most trusted broad spectrum UV protection. It’s also hypoallergenic and non-irritating. Here are some great choices:

I wear Suntegrity 5 in 1 BB Sunscreen SPF 30+ everyday in place of a moisturizer. It is tinted and doubles as foundation - and it looks beautiful on my 60+ year old complexion.

I wear Sheer Strength Pure Physical Spray SPF 50+ transparent sunscreen on my neck, decollette, ears and the back of my hands and/or arms (if exposed). It’s so easy.

6. Go Outside

Spring is here! You can feel it and see it – birds, blossoms, bees, bright days, and busy awakening feelings inside each of us calling us to go outside and see it all. Activities, self care and skin care all transition with the season. I love the process of emerging from winter into spring, and I love doing it mindfully, relishing the steps.

7. Lighten up makeup.
