What’s The Best Skin Care Routine After Obagi Nu Derm?

Cynthia Bailey, MD|May 31, 2012

Hi, I am a 38 year old woman with normal skin and a fan of Dr. Bailey's blog. I am almost finished a 16 week Obagi cycle and I want to purchase one of Dr. Bailey's kits for my maintenance program. I use prescription tretinoin nightly (Retin A .05 cream) and wasn't sure whether I should get the "Anti Aging Antioxidant Kit with Glycolic" or the one "without Glycolic". I noticed in the description of each that the one without mentions that in the PM routine you would finish up with Retin A. In the kit with Glycolic it does not mention Retin A. Can you advice which kit is appropriate for someone using Retin A at night? Thanks, Kara D Hello Kara, When using tretinoin at night the glycolic acid product can be used in the day alternated with the Professional Cell Repair Serum if it's not too harsh for a person's skin type.  For people that have had a pretty easy Obagi NuDerm course it is quite possible the glycolic acid will work out with their skin's tolerance, especially on the tougher parts of the face such as forehead and sides of the face.  Another option is to alternate tretinoin and glycolic acid at night and this makes particular sense for people who have used tretinoin for many years.  That's because after a few years on nightly tretinoin results can be maintained with just 2 or 3 nights a week application.  I usually get people up to the 0.1 cream for 2 years before we drop down to the 2-3 night a week alternating with glycolic acid. I hope that helps. Warm Regards, Cynthia Bailey MD
