Having the right skin care routine makes a huge difference in healing and controlling your psoriasis. There are different types of psoriasis, but they all share the fact that each type of psoriasis is worse when you have dry skin.
Dry skin is somewhat injured and compromised already. And psoriasis is a skin condition that exhibits the “Keobner Phenomenon”, which is a worsening of a skin problem when skin is injured. With psoriasis the psoriatic rash will seed along the injury and start a new problematic area. How this relates to your skin care is that dry skin is injured, and because of the Keobner Phenomenon psoriasis will seed and worsen on areas of dry skin.
Thus, a deeply hydrating skin care routine is important. It is also important not to use harsh soaps and cleansers that remove a lot of oil from your skin to worsen skin dryness.
The other aspect of skin care important to your psoriasis is the ability of prescription medicines to penetrate the thick skin plaques. Dead skin is thick in plaque psoriasis. Therefore, using products with keratolytic ingredients (which help loosen dead cells, such as glycolic acid, lactic acid, urea, and salicylic acid) will help to thin psoriatic plaques so that moisturizers and prescription creams can better penetrate and heal the lesions.
If you suffer from psoriasis on your palms and the soles of your feet, you know that psoriasis causes this skin to break open and become painful and sensitive. Moisturizing and using gentle soaps only will help the skin heal, and will also help fight the development of new areas of involvement.
Scalp psoriasis can respond positively to dandruff shampoos and scalp oils. Pretreating the scalp by wetting it then applying mineral oil, coconut oil, or olive oil for 30 minutes or more before shampooing can help. Use a medicated dandruff shampoo for the last lather and loosen scales gently with a scalp scrubber while shampooing. This will help prescription medicines penetrate better.
Many people with psoriasis experience facial seborrheic dermatitis, too. The combination is called sebopsoriasis. If you have facial redness and scale see my skin care recommendations for seborrheic dermatitis to help heal your facial rash, too. Remember to use broad spectrum and non-irritating sunscreens on your sebopsoriasis facial areas, because they will be more sensitive to sun damage.
