Exfoliation is an important part of almost everyone’s skin care routine after puberty. Once the velvety smooth skin of youth is replaced by a thicker and more sebaceous complexion it takes work to keep skin smooth and soft and pores clean. Whether
- you have acne,
- you want an anti-aging skin care routine to take years off your skin’s appearance
- or you simply want to maintain a bright complexion,
exfoliating two or three times a week is important to fight the build-up of dull dead cells. All your treating and correcting products will penetrate better because dead cells and debris act as a barrier to product actives. Get the best results with your skin care products when you add exfoliation to your skin care routine.
When patients and customers ask me to tell them ‘how to get smooth skin again’, I explain that it is this buildup of dead skin cells (stratum corneum) layered with trapped oil, makeup, dirt and retained old product residue that is making their skin rougher and duller than normal. Exfoliation instantly removes this ‘smutz’, as I call it, to reveal an instantly brighter, more luminous complexion. Because all this ‘schmutz’ will start building up again, twice or thrice a week exfoliation is necessary to keep skin looking young and healthy.
My Bamboo and Clay Exfoliating Facial Scrub is ideal for all but the most sensitive skin. I have found that even people with facial rashes such as seborrhea can benefit from exfoliating away the loose flakes that cling embarrassingly to the skin. It’s important to gently exfoliate though if you have sensitive skin. Gauge your use of exfoliating products by your skin’s sensitivity and never overdo it. One other word of caution, don’t apply products with potentially irritating ingredients like glycolic acid, Retin-A or vitamin C for at least 12 hours after exfoliating if you have any skin sensitivity!
What my patients say,
"My friends tell me how much better my skin looks since I started using it."
