Dandruff

Dandruff of the scalp is a rash that looks like dry skin. The cause is unknown, and treatments are aimed at controlling skin scale and a skin yeast called pityrosporum. Most people use the term “dandruff” to refer to the scalp involvement of seborrheic dermatitis; however, this seborrheic rash can also affect ear, face, chest, and back skin. Skin with dandruff rash is sensitive and easily irritated by rough or irritating skin care products aimed at addressing acne and anti-aging skin concerns.

The easiest way to treat dandruff is to use medicated soap, shampoo, or skin cleanser. Scale can be loosened and exfoliated with a scalp scrubber, or an exfoliating cloth or sponge.  High concentration green tea antioxidants plus caffeine appear to reduce skin redness and inflammation associated with seborrhea. Hydrated skin always heals faster, so applying a gentle and hypoallergenic moisturizer is helpful. Sunscreens used for sun protection should also be non-irritating.

On this page, I list products for scalp dandruff.

Please see the page on seborrheic dermatitis for products recommended for the other body areas plagued by seborrhea.
