Men: Embarrassing Grooming Questions Answered
As a dermatologist, I treat a lot of male patients here at Advanced Skin Care and Dermatology Physicians. Through my more than 25 years of practicing dermatology, I've found that the top two embarrassing complexion flaws that my male patients request treatment for are:
- "Broken" capillaries around the nose and cheeks.
- Facial redness and dry-appearing skin that is scaly from seborrhea or rosacea.
Many men feel like they are stuck with these skin problems and have resigned themselves to the embarrassment. At times, they don't even know to ask me for a solution; so when I suggest one, they are really surprised and thrilled. Those moments are one of the very satisfying aspects of my medical practice - it's such a wonderful feeling to make a difference in people's lives! For patients with broken capillaries, I use Intense Pulsed Light (also called IPL or BBL) treatments, which have the added benefit of refining the skin's overall appearance and treating unwanted brown spots. The entire facial skin is treated, meaning that small, unwanted capillaries are also treated. For spot treatment of just a few large capillaries, such as those around the nose, I can use simple electrical cautery. Although uncomfortable, this treatment is quick and very economical. To really brighten and take years off the appearance of a man's complexion, I often add a Micro Laser Peel (Sciton Micro Laser Peel) to the BBL/IPL treatment. These two treatments can be done at the same time with hardly any down-time. For men with facial redness and scale from seborrhea or rosacea, I adjust their skin care routine to include my Facial Redness Relief Kit. The IPL/BBL treatments help too. I also recommend that they always apply a sunscreen every day, 365 days a year, for the anti-aging benefit and to help prevent skin cancer. Some of the most popular sunscreens for my male patients are: EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46 Sunscreen (for oily or acne-prone complexions) Citrix Sunscreen SPF 40 (for normal complexions and when water resistant sunscreen is needed) While both men and women face skin challenges, there seems to be a stigma attached to men seeking or getting treatment. For whatever reason, men often feel like there is no hope when it comes to these matters. But, this could not be further from the truth! Men, don't be embarrassed about your complexion. Treatments exist that can significantly help your issues and make you feel confident in your own skin. Don't hesitate to call on us today to help with your grooming and skin care needs!
