Did you know that not all facial acne is the same? It’s true!
Pityrosporum folliculitis is a different type of facial acne and needs special treatment to heal.
While many people suffer from facial acne vulgaris, which is the most common type of acne and is typically seen as pimples, cysts, and blackheads, there is another type of facial acne: facial pityrosporum folliculitis.
Facial pityrosporum folliculitis is more common than you may realize. It involves itchy or tender pimples mostly around the hairline, sides of the neck, forehead, and clustered in the T-zone. Unlike acne vulgaris, blackheads are less common and often closed over with skin instead of open and black.
In some cases, both types of facial acne coexist and, in these cases, you need to treat them both.
Similar to body acne, facial pityrosporum folliculitis is caused by pityrosporum yeast. In my dermatology practice, I have discovered that the ingredient pyrithione zinc best targets the pityrosporum yeast.
Step One: Cleanse
The first step in your facial acne treatment is to wash your face. You can cleanse and begin to correct with the right cleansing products. I recommend alternating Calming Zinc Bar Soap with other treatment cleansers, including Glytone Mild Gel Wash Cleanser my Foaming Acne Treatment Cleanser or Foaming Benzoyl Peroxide Acne Treatment Cleanser.
For increased cleansing power, consider adding either a Buf Puf Exfoliating Facial Sponge or Clarisonic Skin Cleansing Brush (either the Clarisonic SMART Pro or the Clarisonic Mia 2) when cleaning your face.
Step Two: Correct
After you clean your face, treat your facial acne with my Salicylic and Glycolic Acne Treatment Pads, Benzoyl Peroxide Acne Treatment Cream or Glytone Exfoliating Lotion. An easy way to get all the helpful treating active ingredients into your skin care routine is to use the Calming Zinc Soap and the Ultimate Acne Solutions Skin Care Kit cleansers and followed by application of those products.
If there are areas of your face that need more hydration prevent dryness when you apply Daily Moisturizing Face Cream for Oily to Normal Skin to these places on your face. Consider adding Green Tea Antioxidant Skin Therapy, applying it twice daily, after your acne treatment products and before your moisturizer to places where you have a lot of redness.
Step Four: Protect
As the final step in your treatment, apply sunscreen. Always use mineral zinc oxide sunscreen for the best protection. The most popular products for acne prone skin in my practice are my Sheer Strength Pure Physical Sunscreen with the most advanced technology to cover complexion flaws while invisably protecting your skin from UV rays. A really popular option without tinting is Sheer Strength Pure Physical Spray Sunscreen. Another option is EltaMD UV SPF 46 Sunscreen provides daily sun protection to help prevent hyperpigmentation of acne scars and for overall anti-aging skin health prevention.
