A reader sent me this. It’s cute and made me chuckle.
Of course, these sunbathers shouldn’t. Hope they’ve got an antioxidant rich smoothie in that cooler to help with the free radicals that are inevitable, because no sunscreen can block all the rays all the time…. and, all of you who are regular readers of my blog already know that these guys should be in the shade wearing a hat and some hip sun protective clothing. At least it looks like the sun is low on the horizon and thus below the peak exposure of mid-day – that’s good.
It’s almost the 4th of July, and for a lot of us, we’ll be outside all day……
Remember, sun protect your skin while you’re outside celebrating, and….
Happy upcoming July 4th to all of you in the U.S.A!
If you haven’t already seen the new sunscreens that I’ve just added to my website, take a look. I’m really excited about them because I think I’ve got something for everyone; I’ve got products that are really easy to use, a mineral zinc oxide one that is highly rated by people with oily and acne-prone skin, and others that qualify as ‘natural’ yet still give great sun protection.

Love the cartoon but sure reminds us to put on that sunscreen. The sun seems stronger than ever these days, could it be the ozone layer? Happy 4th of July to you too!
Yes it has something to do with it, especially in areas with big ozone holes. I think we also now know it’s bad for us, and that makes it feel dangerous. Happy 4th to you too!
We’ve shared with our followers on Pinterest: http://pinterest.com/pin/118571402659980925/. “Bacon” on the beach. So funny, yet such a good reminder to use sun protection!
We totally agree! Wear a hat (one of ours, preferably, but won’t mention our name per the rules above), stay in the shade, drink anti-oxidants and don’t drink the sun.
I can’t believe people are still doing this in such high numbers, despite the evidence and growing # of skin cancer diagnoses! Makes me sad.
Thanks for the laugh!
Aloha Dr, Bailey
Question?
With all the talk in the News about the two young girls that got so severely burned on a field trip(lets remember that the Mother did not put sunscreen on her own children) Ok, take some responsibility and if your kids are that fair for darn sake cover them up-seriously. Got that off my chest.
If a parent puts a good 30-50+SPF chemical sunblock such as SOLBAR on a child at 7:30 am and then they go outside for playtime around 10:30-11;30 Is the sunscreen still effective? Does the sunscreen need to be reapplied then for afternoon play time? Do all sunscreens need at least 10-20 min prior to UV exposure.
Are there certain sunscreens that you prefer for kids? Oh gee Dr Bailey how about one of your amazing blogs on kids and sun protection:)
Thank you and have a great 4th of July Holiday
Much Aloha,
Devra
PS-Aloha Kara
Mineral sunscreens technically sit on the skin and so do not need to ‘absorb’. That said, they often also have chemical absorbers that do, so read the labels to know. Plus, if the skin will be getting wet (swimming) then the product needs to sit and bind to the skin for water resistant protection. Every sunscreen needs to be reapplied after water exposure or rubbing. Hats and clothing need to be employed to keep UV rays off the skin, as does being in the shade (hello parks and schools, shade structures and big trees please). Every product and parental sunscreen application method is different, so it’s safest to say that yes reapply every 2 hours. I tell my patients, at least reapply Solbar Zinc at noon when they eat lunch – plus use all the other very important sun protective maneuvers I mentioned. The goal is to have the fun without any signs of tanning, then you know your sun protection methods are a success.
Thanks!
I love your ETSIS Hats and we sell them in the office. When I wear mine people ask ‘are you a movie star’! Pure glam those brilliant side panels!!
Thank you Dr Baily for the response on kids and sun protection.
