There are several skin bleaching agents, creams, and procedures designed to help brighten your complexion. However, the effects from these products take time and do not always last for years to come. If you want to brighten your complexion quickly and have long-lasting effects, you should consider the skin rejuvenation procedure Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), also known as Broad Band Light (BBL). The winter months are the best time for this procedure; you are less exposed to the sun and more likely to spend more time indoors to stay warm.
Dr. Bailey details the research that supports the anti-aging benefits of IPL treatments in her blog post: Best Procedures to Brighten Your Complexion Fast.
In a new study just published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, IPL treatments done with the Sciton BBL machine (which is what we have in my office) were shown to actually reverse the genetic expression pattern of aged human skin!
Essentially, IPL treatments have the ability to “renew” your skin genes for both normal aging and accelerated (sun damage) aging changes. As Dr. Bailey says, “it’s a fountain of youth miracle.”
What are BBL (IPL) treatments?
Broad Band Light (BBL) is the pulsing of intense flashes of light into your skin. These flashes of light are controlled to target problem areas of the skin, such as brown spots (freckles or age spots) or general widespread red complexion. For example, this procedure has the ability to calm the rashes and inflamed skin associated with rosacea. After a procedure, the skin appears brighter and more supple. My co-workers at a local hospital that I volunteer at will often comment how my skin is “glowing” a few weeks after a BBL treatment.
How many BBL treatments are necessary for results?
For a Broad Band Light regimen to achieve the maximum results, an initial series of 3 to 5 monthly treatments is best. Then, just follow up with yearly treatments that involve 1-3 treatments to maintain the skin “gene rejuvenation” effects.
What other procedures combine with BBL for anti-aging benefits?
To combat fine lines, wrinkles, and scars, a Micro Laser Peel (MPL) is the perfect addition to a BBL. MPLs have the ability to resurface the skin but will require some extra downtime for healing. The Sciton Laser we have in house has both MLP and BBL available on the same tool, making it easy to switch from one treatment to the next.
If you are local to Sonoma County, check out all the laser and IPL treatments we offer. Please feel free to contact the office to arrange for a new cosmetic consultation regarding laser treatments or schedule your annual maintenance treatment.
