Back Acne – The 5 Step Plan of Attack

For this week’s “Find it Again Friday” we are revisiting Dr. Bailey’s 5 steps to treat back acne, aka Bacne, from her oringinal blog post: Back Acne & Chest Acne: Will They Ruin Your Summer.

What is Back Acne?

Back acne is not like the acne we experience on our facial skin. Dr. Bailey finds pityrosporum folliculitis, a yeast, as the root cause for most of her back acne and other body acne patients. The treatment for yeast acne germs differs greatly from the traditional bacteria acne germs. Instead of anti-bacterial cleansers, anti-fungal and other skin care practices are needed to get rid of this pesky skin issue. Dr. Bailey has provided the core skin care products and practices to treat back acne in following section.

The 5 Step Back Acne Treatment Plan

1. Cleanse with medicated products designed to treat back acne

Use medicated products that kill yeast and unclog pores. Dr. Bailey’s Back and Body Acne Kit incorporates these key elements: Foaming Zinc Cleanser to kill yeast (2% pyrithinone zinc) and Foaming Benzoyl Peroxide Cleanser (10% benzoyl peroxide) to unclog pores. This kit also includes a salux wash cloth that provides physical exfoliation for deeper cleansing.

2.  Keep your back and body free of sweat and oil

Besides cleansing with medicated soaps at least once a day, also shower immediately after sweaty activities. Pityrosporom folliculitis thrives off sweat and oil. If it is not possible to shower after a workout, wipe the sweat off your skin with rubbing alcohol and change into a clean shirt as soon as possible.

3. Try special skin care back treatments

Visiting your local dermatologist or aesthetician for a once a month back facials or light skin peel will help purge your back acne skin of oils and germs. Only necessary till your skin clears up.

4. Diet changes

A diet high in sugar and oil feed yeast germs; sugar and oils are yeasts’ favorite foods. A low carb and low fat diet will provide little nourishment for yeast and slow their growth. Dr. Bailey’s Alkaline Mediterranean diet is perfect for back acne sufferers.

5. Last resort: cautiously expose your back acne to sun

Dr. Bailey only uses this step for patients who have severe chest and back acne and have tried all the other steps above with little to no changes. 5 minutes of midday sun will suppress your immune system that is fighting the yeast germs and causing your acne to develop. This can help acne heal relatively fast, but you are exposing you skin to the harmful effects of sun. Sun can lead to permanent skin damage such as freckles, wrinkles, and and skin cancers. This is a very controversial approach and Dr. Bailey stresses to use this as a last resort method.

    So glad you dodged the arsenal headed your way! Very pleased to know this!

    I use a 10% benzoyl peroxide wash on my back and leave it on for about 30 seconds before rinsing it off. I think that’s enough for it to be effective. I have a question about salicylic acid. I have a 6% salicylic acid shampoo. How long does it need to be on the scalp to work? I appreciate that this is the wrong spot, but I hope thhat you don’t mind.

    Back acne is really annoying issue for me… Sometimes when I’m laying on my back it hurts that acne. I have tried a 2% salicylic acid soak and it helped me a bit but not so much as I wanted… Maybe I will try back acne treaatment kit but what can I try more?

    These are very helpful information. Thank you for sharing. I never knew any of the facts you have mentioned. My friend has back acne problems and I don’t but we are exposed to the same environment and we even workout together and both of us never shower after every workout. It puzzles me, really, he is even more vane than I am. He hates to let sweat drip off his skin so he tends to wipe it away immediately while I am on the opposite side. I have met his family and none of them have acne problems and in all fairness, they have very clear skin. I really don’t get as to why he has all the back acne while we don’t even though he is one health conscious guy.
